Roadmap
What's coming to BitDinghy, roughly in order. These are plans, not promises, and there are no dates: BitDinghy is made by one person, and each feature ships when it's tested and ready.
Now: the first release
BitDinghy 0.1.0 for Windows 10 and 11: magnet links and .torrent files,
choosing files, pause and resume, a queue, speed and sharing limits, history, recommended
settings, plain-language problems, and the dinghy command line. See What’s new.
Next
- Package managers: install and update with
wingetor Scoop. - Small comforts in the window: an “Open folder” button on finished downloads, a folder picker for the download folder, and a folder tree with a filter for downloads with many files.
- A light theme, alongside today’s dark one.
- “Check for updates”: a button that looks at this website only when you press it. BitDinghy will never check by itself.
Later
- Code signing, so Windows stops warning when you first open BitDinghy, through the SignPath Foundation, which signs open-source programs for free.
- Linux: a portable version (AppImage) with the same features, after the Windows version is complete.
- Encrypted connections between peers, as soon as the engine BitDinghy is built on supports them.
- “Only download while my VPN is connected”, as an option.
- Sharing limits per download, in addition to the limits for all downloads.
Not planned
To keep BitDinghy small, private and focused, these are not planned:
- Search, catalogues or recommendations of things to download. BitDinghy is a download tool; you bring your own links.
- Ads, accounts, tracking or a paid version.
- A Mac version, for now.
