Privacy
The short version: BitDinghy collects nothing, and this website collects nothing.
The app
BitDinghy has no tracking, no analytics, no ads and no accounts. It doesn’t check for updates by itself and doesn’t send crash reports anywhere. What it does send is only what downloading needs:
- Download traffic. BitDinghy connects to other people who have the same download (peers), to
the trackers named in the magnet link or
.torrentfile, and to the DHT (a shared “phone book” of peers). This is how BitTorrent works: these computers see your internet (IP) address and which download you’re asking for, just as they see everyone else’s. - A web link you give it. When you paste an
https://link to a.torrentfile, BitDinghy fetches that file from that website. - Your router, only if you ask. With the UPnP setting on (it’s off unless you turn it on), BitDinghy asks your router to open a port.
Everything else stays on your computer, in the data folder next to the program: your settings, your download list, your download history, and crash reports. If BitDinghy crashes, the report is saved there and the window tells you; it’s yours to keep, delete, or attach to a problem report if you want to.
Connections between peers aren’t encrypted yet: the engine BitDinghy is built on doesn’t support BitTorrent encryption so far. It will come when the engine supports it.
This website
- No cookies of its own, no analytics, no tracking pixels, no ads.
- Nothing from other companies is loaded: no web fonts, no embedded videos or “like” buttons. Every page except Feedback works without any JavaScript; the Feedback page is described below.
- The site is hosted on Cloudflare. Like any web host, Cloudflare handles your request and may keep short technical logs (such as your IP address) to run and protect its network, under Cloudflare’s privacy policy. This site doesn’t turn on Cloudflare’s visitor analytics.
- The download files are hosted on GitHub Releases; downloading one is a request to GitHub, under GitHub’s privacy statement.
- The donation links lead to Ko-fi and GitHub Sponsors, which have their own privacy policies. Nothing about you is passed to them by this site.
The Feedback page
- What you type in the feedback form (your message, and your name and email if you give them) is sent by email to the BitDinghy developer, using Cloudflare’s email service. It is not stored on this website. Your name and email are optional and only used to reply to you. To have a message deleted from the inbox, email hello@bitdinghy.com.
- To keep spam out, that page uses Cloudflare Turnstile, a check that runs in your browser
and usually needs no clicks. It loads a script from Cloudflare (
challenges.cloudflare.com), which looks at signals from your browser to tell people from bots, under Cloudflare’s privacy policy. Turnstile is used on that page only, and only to check that the message comes from a person. - The page also runs a small script of its own, only to send the form without leaving the page. To limit abuse, your IP address is counted for one minute (at most five messages a minute) and not kept.
- Prefer not to use the form? Email hello@bitdinghy.com instead.
